The gigantic Perito Moreno glacier
Today we take you to Argentina, more precisely to the Perito Moreno glacier.
The Perito Moreno Glacier
This gigantic glacier is located in the south of Argentina, in Patagonia, in the province of Santa Cruz. The Perito Moreno is a monster of 250 km², 30 km long, 170 metres high, 74 metres of which are above the surface. The glacier has the particularity of not being in retreat, it advances of 2 meters per day on the lake and blocks are detached by calving.
There is no particular legend about the Perito Moreno glacier, except that it owes its name to an Argentinean naturalist Francisco Moreno who played a major role in the discussions for the delimitation of the border with Chile.
If you are looking for similarities in the world, there are many similar but probably less imposing glaciers. The largest glacier in the world is the Matanuska glacier in Alaska.
